Hello everyone!

This is the #3 in an ongoing series of mini-posts we have started.

Virupaksha Temple
Virupaksha Temple

Virupaksha Temple, situated on the banks of Tungabhadra River, in the centre of Hampi, is the main tourist attraction in Hampi. It is part of the group of monuments at Hampi, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This principal & oldest functioning temple (since 7th century AD) in Hampi is sought after by both tourists and pilgrims alike.  The yearly chariot festival held in the month of February attracts tourists from all over the world. The temple is dedicated to Virupaksha (a form of Shiva).

The temple complex has two giant courtyards, many sub shrines, pillared halls, flag posts, lamp posts, towered gateways and even a large temple kitchen. The temple complex is carved in stone, and its walls, pillars & panels are decorated with beautiful carvings depicting episodes from Shiva’s life, different scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata and scenes from Krishna’s childhood.

Hampi village comprises ruins of the ancient Vijayanagara Empire, and in addition to Virupaksha Temple, several other tourist spots are noteworthy like Vitthal Temple, Hazara Rama Temple, Anjeniya Temple & Matanga Hill. A visit to Hampi is bound to be etched in your memory for years to come. 🙂
